# Germany Visa from Dubai (2026): VFS Global, Your Emirate, and the Verpflichtungserklärung

Germany keys your entry on your passport and your visa on your paperwork. Emirati passport holders enter Germany visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. UAE residents on a non-exempt passport must apply for a Schengen type-C visa through VFS Global — the official partner of the German Consulate General in the UAE, per the missions' own pages, checked 21 July 2026. Your Emirates ID does not exempt you. This page covers the four things Germany changes for a UAE-resident file: the centre, your emirate's mission, the Verpflichtungserklärung, and the fee stack. ## Is Germany visa-free from the UAE? Citizens yes, residents no — the 30-second sort

Emirati passport holders get 90 days in any 180 with no visa; everyone else applies first. UAE nationals are on the EU visa-exempt list, so an Emirati citizen files nothing before a short visit — a point the German Missions in the UAE confirm on their own pages (uae.diplo.de, SERP snapshot 21 July 2026). A UAE residence visa does the opposite job: it lets you apply from inside the UAE, but it grants zero entry rights at the German border.

So the fork is passport, not residency. Hold an Emirati passport and you fly on the stamp. Hold an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Syrian or other non-exempt passport and live in the UAE, and you file a Schengen type-C short-stay visa — good "for a maximum of 90 days within 6 months to all Schengen states" (German Missions in the UAE, uae.diplo.de, SERP snapshot 21 July 2026).

The reader here is usually not a novice. A Syrian resident "born and raised in Dubai" with "stable income in a reputable company" still worried over a bank statement with recent debt settlements (r/SchengenVisa, 5 June 2026). Germany reads even a strong file line by line — so the rest of this page is machinery, not reassurance.

## Where you actually apply: VFS Global, and which German mission covers your emirate — verified with a date

Germany routes UAE applicants through VFS Global, not TLScontact — the split from France starts here. "We are the official partner of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany," reads the VFS Global Germany page for the UAE (visa.vfsglobal.com/are/en/deu, SERP snapshot 21 July 2026). Applications "can be submitted by appointment only at the Germany Visa Application Centres in Abu Dhabi or Dubai" (VFS Global, same snapshot). France uses TLScontact; Germany uses VFS. Do not carry a France assumption into a Germany file.

We read this contract from the German missions' and VFS Global's own pages in the SERP snapshot captured 21 July 2026; we did not open the live VFS portal on the day. If a ranking agency page names a different operator, believe the mission and VFS over the agency.

Jurisdiction splits by where you live. The German Missions in the UAE state: "You can only apply for a visa at the German Consulate General in Dubai if your habitual residence is in the United Arab Emirates" (uae.diplo.de, National Visa page, SERP snapshot 21 July 2026). In practice two German missions serve the UAE — the Consulate General in Dubai and the Embassy in Abu Dhabi — and VFS runs a centre for each in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Your emirate of residence decides which mission owns your file; VFS routes it there.

The booking mechanics — walk-in rules, slot scarcity, prime-time — are not restated here. Germany slots run scarce May to July, when applicants grab a "germany vfs dubai" slot months ahead because "its soooo difficult to get a slot anywhere" (r/SchengenVisa, appointment thread, snapshot 21 July 2026).

## The Germany-specific document the generic Schengen list misses: the Verpflichtungserklärung

The Verpflichtungserklärung is a formal obligation letter your German host signs — and it takes real time, because it is mailed to you as an original. It is Germany's version of France's Attestation d'Accueil: a host-side document no generic Schengen checklist localises. A UAE resident preparing a Germany file via VFS Dubai described it exactly: "a formal Obligation Letter (Verpflichtungserklärung), which was mailed to me as an original physical copy" (r/UAE, 7 June 2026).

Here is the mechanism. Your host in Germany goes to their local Ausländerbehörde — the German foreigners' authority — proves they can cover your costs, and signs a declaration accepting financial responsibility for your stay. The signed original is then posted to you in the UAE. That is the lead-time trap: you cannot generate it in Dubai, and you cannot submit a scan. The France sibling case is the warning — an applicant's host letter "had not yet arrived from France because it was still in transit with DHL on the day of my visa appointment. I only had a scanned copy" (r/SchengenVisa, 9 July 2026). Order it weeks early.

Now the honest limit. A UAE applicant asked the right question: "Since I have the formal Obligation Letter from my friend, do I still need to provide hotel bookings or a detailed daily itinerary?" (r/UAE, 7 June 2026). The letter can substitute for hotel bookings and it evidences accommodation and cover. It does not automatically satisfy proof of means. In the France-equivalent case above, the applicant held the host's Attestation and was still "refused on the ground of insufficient proof of means of subsistence." Treat the Verpflichtungserklärung as one strong document, not a full replacement for your own funds, ties and itinerary. Terms like this are in the [glossary](/glossary/).

## The fee, like for like: the consulate's EUR charge vs the AED the agencies quote

The consular fee is EUR 90 for an adult under the EU Visa Code, in force since 11 June 2024 — but the Germany-from-Dubai search results still quote EUR 80, the pre-June-2024 rate. Two ranking pages print it: germany-visa.org lists "€80 (equivalent to AED 332.62) for adults," and oravisa.com lists "Visa Fee: EUR 80" (both SERP snapshot 21 July 2026; oravisa dated 21 February 2026). The current EU Visa Code adult fee is EUR 90, EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6 — see [the Schengen fee table](/from-uae/schengen/fees/), checked 21 July 2026. So both stand: the law says EUR 90; the top Germany results say EUR 80. Pay the rate the consulate charges on the day, not the one an old page cached.

There are three separate bills, not one blended number. Do not let an agency fold them together.

The consulate collects the EUR fee in dirhams at its own monthly reference rate, not the live market rate, so your AED total shifts month to month. ## The main-destination rule Germany actually enforces — most nights in Germany, counted

You apply to Germany only if Germany holds the most nights of your trip; on an equal-nights tie, you apply to your country of first entry. VFS states it plainly: the Germany file "is valid for visa applications in the United Arab Emirates if Germany is your main destination" (VFS Global Schengen leaflet, SERP snapshot 21 July 2026). Count nights, not countries.

Work a real itinerary. A UAE resident posted: "Netherlands — 3 days, Belgium — 2 days, France — 8 days, Germany — 6 days, Switzerland — 6 days, Austria — 3 days" (r/SchengenVisa, 1 July 2026). France holds the most nights at eight, so France is the competent consulate — not Germany, even though Germany's six ties Switzerland's six. Flip it — Germany 6, France 4, Netherlands 2 — and Germany becomes your consulate. If two countries tie for the top, your first point of entry breaks it. This is an assessment of whether your stated trip is genuine, not a national trait. German consulates read the file for itinerary coherence, and two patterns fail. One is visa shopping — naming family in a country you are not visiting; the applicant above worried their Spain in-laws might read that way. The other is a recognizably AI-generated itinerary: a nearby refusal came back because "my itinerary looked template like, yes I did use chat GPT to format it" (r/SchengenVisa, appointment thread, snapshot 21 July 2026). Write a real trip, in your own words, that matches your bookings.

## Processing time and the honest answer on multi-entry validity

The legal decision window is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in individual cases. Germany-from-Dubai pages quote the short end: oravisa.com lists "Standard processing 15 calendar days, up to 45 days in peak summer" (21 February 2026). Community reality drifts longer — one applicant reported "25 days and my visa is still under process" (r/SchengenVisa, snapshot 21 July 2026). May to July are the slow months. Two more items, one line each. Travel medical insurance is mandatory: at least EUR 30,000 of cover, valid across the whole Schengen area for the whole trip (Schengen scheme rule; the four conditions a certificate must meet are on [the Schengen insurance page](/from-uae/schengen/insurance/), checked 21 July 2026). Your passport must be valid at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area — three months, not six (Schengen Borders Code rule, checked 21 July 2026).

On multi-entry validity, the honest answer: it is not a product you buy, it is the consulate's discretion. A clean, coherent file earns longer validity; a thin one gets a single entry cut to your travel dates. The reader who "held two Schengen visas before... both used and I returned on time — clean record" (r/SchengenVisa, 1 July 2026) is the profile that earns multi-entry — prior clean Schengens plus a genuine return profile. No fee tier upgrades it, and no agency can promise it.

### Can I travel to Germany with a UAE residence visa?

Not on the residence visa alone, unless your passport is visa-exempt. A UAE residence visa lets you apply for Germany from inside the UAE — it does not grant entry. Emirati passport holders enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180. UAE residents on a non-exempt passport must hold a Schengen type-C visa, applied for through VFS Global. ### Is Germany visa-free for UAE residents?

It depends on your passport, not your residency. Emirati citizens are visa-free for Germany. UAE residents holding a passport that is not on the EU visa-exempt list must apply for a Schengen visa before travel. Your Emirates ID changes none of this — Germany reads the passport. ### Do I still need hotel bookings if I have a Verpflichtungserklärung?

The obligation letter can stand in for hotel bookings and shows your host covers your costs, but it does not automatically satisfy proof of means. ### How much bank balance is required for a Germany visa?

There is no fixed official minimum. The consulate assesses whether your funds credibly cover the stay you describe, plus your return ties; Germany publishes no single bank-balance threshold.
