The second is a switch into "further examination". That is the Schengen name for what US applicants call administrative processing. The 45-day ceiling is written into law. It is not a sign your file is broken. May to July is the peak holiday and honeymoon season. Everyone lodges at once. Slots vanish and biometrics slip later, so consulate queues lengthen. Applicants describe it plainly. "No new appointments are opening for June/July," one wrote on 8 June 2026 (r/SchengenVisa). There is no formal urgent or expedited processing track for a Schengen visa, the way the UK sells priority. The only real lever is applying early. "Administrative processing" is the US State Department's phrase, from Section 221(g). Schengen has no status by that name. Its two equivalents are further examination and prior consultation. Further examination keeps your file inside the 45-day window for extra checks. Prior consultation applies to specific nationalities. One member state must consult other Schengen states' central authorities before issuing. Those states get 7 calendar days to reply (Visa Code, Article 22). Neither is a verdict on you. Some passports trigger consultation every single time. One caveat we cannot resolve from the outside. February to April 2026 saw a cluster of slow returns and refusals on Netherlands filings from VFS Dubai. One applicant held a 10-year US visa and a Japanese visa and was still refused. The exact wording varies by mission. Track with the reference number printed on your submission receipt. Your consulate's VFS tracking page takes it. Passport return by courier is the final step. The Netherlands applicant was told flatly "21 to 45 days." Both waits were legal, if not comfortable. One quiet trigger for further examination is a file that reads as machine-written. A Sweden applicant was refused and told the "itinerary looked template like". She confirmed she "did use chatGPT to format it" (r/SchengenVisa, 10 May 2026). That is one consulate, one file, one date — not a published policy, and we have found no consulate that publishes one. Write your cover letter and itinerary in your own words anyway. ## How early to apply so non-refundable bookings are not at risk Apply as early as the Visa Code allows — up to six months before travel. In the May–July peak, lodge biometrics at least eight weeks out. Grab the appointment the day the window opens. Count back 45 days for the decision. Never buy a non-refundable ticket before the visa is in your passport. The earliest you may lodge is six months before travel. The latest, in principle, is 15 calendar days before (Visa Code, Article 9). In peak season, 15 days is reckless. Take a trip departing 1 August 2026. The six-month window opens around 1 February. At the 45-day ceiling, the consulate needs your admissible file by 17 June just to decide in time. That leaves zero buffer. Add courier return and collection, and biometrics should be in by early June. Peak-season slots take weeks to secure. It is grounded in what went wrong for others. The Czech applicant was "making many non-refundable bookings" at the 2-week mark with no decision. The Netherlands applicant had a 23 May flight while stuck at day 21. Keep flights and hotels refundable until the passport comes back with the sticker.
