Extend inside or exit-and-return, dated. # UAE Visit Visa Extension 2026: Extend Inside or Exit-and-Return, Decided Before Expiry A UAE visit visa extension buys 30 more days for AED 600 plus 5% VAT at GDRFA, filed while your current visa is still valid, checked 21 July 2026. The alternative is to skip it and run an exit-and-return instead. The two routes cost about the same on paper and fail completely differently. A refused extension leaves you in the UAE on your current status. A refused re-entry leaves you standing airside with none. An extension prolongs the same visit visa. Google's AI Overview answers this search with "30 days, up to 120" and stops. This page starts where that stops: which route, at what price, and which one keeps you inside the country if it goes wrong. ## Extend inside or exit and return: the two routes, priced and dated AED 600 plus 5% VAT is GDRFA's published fee to extend 30 days inside the country. An exit-and-return run can undercut that on the flight cost alone. Price is not the deciding factor. Reversibility is. A refused extension leaves you in the UAE, still on your current status. A refused re-entry leaves you airside, same day. The exit-and-return assumes a new visa will be granted when you land; the extension does not. That difference decides the table, and the two failure modes below spell it out. The answer by category, not in general Not every visa extends. A 96-hour transit visa cannot be extended at all, per [etihad.com](https://www.etihad.com/en/plan/travel-essentials/visa), read 21 July 2026. A Filipino visa on arrival forks at the border: the 14-day version at Dh100 extends once; the 60-day version at Dh250 does not extend, ever. A standard 30-day or 60-day visit visa extends 30 days at a time. "Can I extend?" has a category answer, not a yes. The AI Overview hedges with "most UAE tourist and visit visas". The June rule change makes the point sharper. The National reported that from 25 June 2026 Filipino travellers choose at entry between a 14-day Dh100 visa on arrival that can be extended once and a 60-day Dh250 visa that cannot be extended at all. So for a visa on arrival, extendability is decided before you land, not after. A transit visa is a firm no. For an ordinary visit visa, the answer is 30 days at a time — the definition of *entry permit* and the other terms used here sit in the [glossary](/glossary/). ## How the inside-country extension works: GDRFA Dubai vs ICP smart services, and why "before expiry" is the whole rule "Before expiry" is the whole rule. File the extension while your visit visa is still valid, never after. Dubai routes through GDRFA Dubai and its authorised travel agents; the other six emirates route through ICP smart services and the UAEICP app. Approval adds 30 days from your current expiry date, not from the day it is approved. Gulf News reported the [authorised-travel-agent channel](https://gulfnews.com/living-in-uae/visa-immigration/how-uae-visit-visa-holders-can-apply-for-30-day-extension-inside-the-country--total-cost-application-process-and-requirements-explained-1.1685962211633) for a 30-day in-country extension on 30 July 2024. HHS Lawyers reported the same 30-day extension on the UAEICP smart app on 9 January 2025. Here is the sequence, with example dates. Confirm your own on your ICP or GDRFA card. Visit visa expires 30 August 2026 — file the extension by about 25 August, before expiry, through GDRFA Dubai or the UAEICP app → extension approved → new expiry 29 September, 30 days added → to add another 30 days, file again before that new date. Miss the expiry date and there is nothing to extend. What starts instead is an overstay, on the AED 50-a-day clock. Extension is the move before expiry; the [overstay fine and grace period](/uae-visa/overstay-fine/) is everything after it. They are separate transactions, cross-linked in both directions so neither stands in for the other. ## What the extension costs: three published figures that disagree AED 50, AED 600 and AED 1,150 are all published as "the extension fee" — and they price different things. ICP's "Visa Extension" card lists AED 50, but that extends an entry permit's validity before you arrive. GDRFA's card lists AED 600 plus 5% VAT to extend a stay you are already in. The Economic Times stack, dated 3 December 2025, totals AED 1,150. All checked 21 July 2026. The like-with-like trap is the whole problem. ICP's card, dated 11 December 2024, prices a different product: extending an entry permit's validity before you land. GDRFA's "Extending a visitor visa (upon arrival)" card lists AED 600 plus 5% VAT plus a separate "fee inside the country" to extend a stay in progress. The Economic Times itemised that inside-country stack on 3 December 2025 — AED 600 base, 5% VAT, AED 500 inside-UAE processing, AED 10 Knowledge, AED 10 Innovation — totalling AED 1,150. HHS Lawyers reported AED 750 on the UAEICP app on 9 January 2025, which fits neither. The AI Overview cites the ICP AED 50 card and the GDRFA AED 600 card side by side without flagging that they price different products. We do not average them. Agency bundles are dated third-party points only, captured from our 21 July 2026 snapshot: arabiers from AED 990, amer247 AED 1,100. ## How long can you actually stay: 120 days, 180 days a year, or twice a year — the sources disagree 120 days, or 180 days a calendar year, or "twice a year" — four sources, four answers, printed with their dates. Google's AI Overview says 30 days each time, to a maximum of 120 (captured July 2026, 12 cited sources). bestaxca says total stay cannot exceed 180 days within a calendar year (17 October 2025). uaevisaportal says only twice a year, up to 120 days (8 September 2024). filings.ae says 30 days "at a time" with no annual cap stated (26 March 2026). No incumbent page prints the disagreement; the AI Overview picks 120 silently and moves on. Here is who says what. The AI Overview is a summary of a dozen commercial blogs, not a government card. bestaxca and uaevisaportal are commercial visa agencies. filings.ae is another. None of them is ICP or GDRFA. So if you are on day 25 of a 30-day visa asking how to extend a visit visa after 3 months, do not trust a blog's cap. Log in to your own ICP or GDRFA account and read the remaining validity there. That is the only count that binds you, and it is the one an airport officer reads too. ## The exit-and-return run: when it is cheaper, and the two ways it fails An exit-and-return run — a same-day airport-to-airport hop, often to Muscat — can beat the AED 600 extension on the headline flight cost, and it skips the before-expiry timing. It fails two ways. The new visa can be refused on arrival. And it can be refused by nationality. Both failures land airside, with no status to fall back on. Checked 21 July 2026. The run is cheaper when a budget flight plus an agency fee undercuts the AED 1,150 inside-country stack, and it resets you on a fresh visit visa without the entry-permit-first timing. That is why people use it. It fails in the open. One traveller ran an a2a flight to Muscat on the last day of his grace period to buy two more months to job-hunt. Back at Sharjah airport his visit visa came up "as rejected done by my agency," with no reason given: "im here for so long nearly 5 hours I feel so dead inside and sad" (r/UAE, 7 July 2026). The second failure is nationality. In June 2026 a resident wrote that his terminated friend, 15 days into his grace period, was told "everyone is saying, visas for Pakistanis are closed" (r/UAE, 18 June 2026). We print that as a documented channel state with its date, not as a verdict on any passport. The run assumes a new visa will be granted; when that assumption breaks, it breaks at the border. The inside-country extension is the only route where a refusal leaves you inside the UAE, on the status you already hold. ## If the extension is rejected: the grace-period question, the AED 50/day clock, and the May 13 retroactive update AED 50 a day is the flat overstay rate the AI Overview quotes, and it starts when your visa expires — not when a rejection arrives. Whether any grace period cushions a refused extension is the question no official card we read answers. What is documented: on 13 May 2026 GDRFA fines "got updated for everyone," a traveller was told, with no reason given. Checked 21 July 2026. The grace-period rule for a refused extension is a recurring unanswered question in the community, and no ICP or GDRFA card we checked on 21 July 2026 closes it. What is on record is how fast the numbers move. A traveller who expected a fine waiver to carry her to her departure date was hit with a retroactive charge: "I called GDRFA and they said the fines got updated on May 13 for everyone but they are not sure what the reason was, if the waiver has ended or it was a system glitch." She was told to argue it with the airport immigration officer, during the Eid holidays (r/dubai, 20 May 2026). Connect the two facts. An extension filed before expiry is the only move that does not depend on a waiver surviving an overnight system update.
