UAE nationals vs UAE residents: which UK permission you actually need
UAE nationals need a UK ETA, a digital Electronic Travel Authorisation. Expat residents on a foreign passport need a UK Standard Visitor visa — an online gov.uk application plus biometrics at VFS Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Your passport decides the route, not your UAE residence. Both cover stays of up to 6 months.
The ETA is applied for through an app. There is no appointment and no fingerprints. The Standard Visitor route has both.
The split runs this whole page. An Emirati passport routes to the ETA. Any other passport routes to the Standard Visitor visa. That holds even with 20 years of Dubai residence and an Emirates ID in your wallet. No ranking page for this search leads with that fork; Google’s AI Overview cites greenappletravel, ukvisa.blog and regaltoursuae, and none of them separates the two audiences.
Your UAE residence visa is not UK travel permission. It does not add you to the ETA list, and it does not stand in for a visa. It matters later, as proof you will go home. It is not a ticket in.
Two sources disagree about what you actually receive. Google’s AI Overview for uk eta vs standard visitor visa, captured 20 July 2026, calls the Standard Visitor visa “a physical visa sticker in your passport.” The Abu Dhabi applicant who posted an approval on 10 July 2026 recorded something else — “Visa type: eVisa” (r/ukvisa, 10 July 2026). Apply on gov.uk, enrol biometrics at VFS Dubai or Abu Dhabi — the actual sequence
Five steps run a UK Standard Visitor visa from the UAE. Apply online on gov.uk, pay the fee, book a biometrics appointment at VFS Dubai or Abu Dhabi, enrol fingerprints and self-upload documents, then wait for the decision. Most of it happens on a screen. You visit a centre once.
- Apply on gov.uk. Complete the gov.uk online application as a single Standard Visitor form. Do it on the official site, not on a copy hosted by an agency.
- Pay the fee online. The amount, and its dirham equivalent, are on the fees page below.
- Book biometrics enrolment at the VFS UK Dubai and Abu Dhabi centres. VFS runs the appointment, nothing more.
- Attend once. A photo and fingerprints take minutes. Then self-upload your supporting documents on the VFS site, or hand them over at the counter.
- Wait for the decision. The eVisa or the decision letter arrives by email.
The centre handles logistics only. VFS does not decide your visa — a UK Home Office caseworker does, and never meets you. A paid “premium lounge” buys a shorter queue, not a better outcome. gov.uk owns the form and the eligibility rules; use the official page and read them there.

What UK caseworkers want to see from a Dubai applicant
A UK caseworker checks three things: you can pay for the trip, you have a real reason to go, and you will come back. From the UAE that means financial evidence, a clear travel reason, and proof of ties to the UAE — your job, your tenancy, your residence visa. The exact pack sits on the documents page.
Funds come first. Recent bank statements, or balance statements, that show settled money that is yours. One approved applicant used current-balance statements rather than full transaction lists (r/ukvisa, 7 July 2026). A lump sum parked days before you apply reads worse than a steady balance, not better.
Reason comes next: a short document that explains why you are travelling and when you return. Then ties to the UAE — employment and approved leave, a tenancy or Ejari, and your residence visa. These answer the only question that refuses people: will you leave.
Host cases follow their own logic. A UK resident on a modest income can still invite you. One host earning about £450 a week asked whether that was enough to bring a brother from Dubai (r/ukvisa, 28 June 2026). The file is weighed on the applicant’s own ties and funds, not only the host’s payslip.
A first-hand tactic that keeps recurring: combine into one indexed PDF. An approved applicant “combined everything into one PDF and submitted with an index page so it’s easier for the person looking at the application” (r/ukvisa, 10 July 2026). A caseworker who finds a document in seconds is a caseworker not hunting for a reason to doubt you.
One caution before you draft anything. Do not let a chatbot write your cover letter or itinerary in its default voice. A Schengen applicant who used ChatGPT to format an itinerary had it flagged as “template like” and read as visa shopping (Reddit, Sweden visa case, 2026). The UK is lower-risk, but a cover letter that reads like a template still works against you. Write it plainly, in your own words. Fee and realistic timeline from the UAE
£115 is the fee UAE applicants reported for the up-to-6-months Standard Visitor visa, in reports running from 2024 through July 2026. You pay it in dirhams at the day’s rate. gov.uk targets a decision in 3 weeks — 15 working days — on the standard service. Priority services cost more and decide faster.

Fifteen working days is a target, not a promise, and it counts from your biometrics appointment — not from the day you paid the fee. Longer visit visas (2, 5 and 10 years) exist and cost more, but most family and tourist trips run on the single up-to-6-months visa.
The calm bit — one dated Abu Dhabi decision landed in 4 working days, not 15
gov.uk sets a 15-working-day target. The one dated UAE decision we could source beat it by a wide margin: biometrics Thursday 2 July 2026, approval Wednesday 8 July 2026. That is 4 working days, VFS Abu Dhabi, standard service, eVisa. One case is not a rate. Plan for 15 working days and treat anything faster as a bonus.
Read three dated cases, not a reassurance.
- Dubai, flight already booked. Biometrics 9 June, flight for Monday 29 June, with the 15th working day falling on a Tuesday. The applicant expected the decision with days to spare (r/UAE, 24 June 2026).
- A comparison, not a UAE case. An applicant resident in a Schengen country submitted on 30 June, gave biometrics on 2 July, and had approval on 7 July 2026 — 3 working days, standard service (r/ukvisa, 7 July 2026). Different country of residence, so it does not extend the UAE range. It shows the same UK-side speed.
One dated Abu Dhabi case landed in four working days; the decision arrives by email as an eVisa.
We will not publish a working-day range off one UAE decision. What the file actually supports is narrower: one Abu Dhabi approval in 4 working days, one Dubai applicant still inside the 15-day window at the time of posting, and one non-UAE case at 3. No dated UAE refusal and no dated long delay surfaced in the June–July 2026 threads we read. That absence is worth stating, and it is not the same as a low refusal rate — we have no published rate for this route.
The failure mode here is rarely slowness. It is booking a non-refundable flight before the decision lands. Apply with a few weeks' margin, use the standard service, and let the 15-working-day target be your worst case rather than your plan.
