UK ETA vs Standard Visitor Visa From the UAE: Your Passport Decides, Not Your Residence

Which route your passport puts you on

Your passport decides, not your UAE residence. A UAE, Saudi, Bahraini, Kuwaiti, Omani or Qatari passport takes the UK ETA, £20, no fingerprints. An Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Egyptian passport takes the Standard Visitor visa, £135, fingerprints at VFS. Permitted stay six months on both. Fees checked on gov.uk, 21 July 2026.

Which UK route your passport puts you on

Two statutory lists produce that table, both opened 21 July 2026. Appendix ETA National List names who must hold an ETA. Appendix Visitor: Visa national list names who must hold a visa. Row three is the one nobody prints for a UAE reader. The fork is not Emirati against expat. A Dubai resident on a Canadian, Malaysian or Italian passport gets the same £20 ETA. The question “which UK permission do I need” has one input: the passport.

UAE and GCC nationals: the ETA, required since 22 February 2024

£20, no appointment, no fingerprints. UAE nationals ETA eligibility began with travel on or after 22 February 2024, the same date as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Qatar went first, on 15 November 2023. So GCC nationals travel authorisation arrived on two dates. Both sit in Appendix ETA National List, checked 21 July 2026.

You apply on the UK ETA app or on gov.uk. Bring the passport you will travel with, an email address and a payment card. Then photograph the passport and your face. A decision “usually” arrives within a day. gov.uk asks you to allow 3 working days. Biometrics not required for ETA applicants: nobody takes your fingerprints.

An ETA lasts 2 years, or until your passport expires if that comes sooner. It is tied to the passport you applied with. A renewed passport means a fresh £20. There is no visa needed for UAE passport holders on these trips — but an ETA is not a visa either, which the last section returns to.

Three ETA fees are in circulation and only one is live. gov.uk says £20, checked 21 July 2026. The GBP 16 ETA fee printed across this search appeared on no official page that day. Older again: a European Commission travel page, dated 27 March 2025 in our 20 July 2026 search capture, still says an ETA “currently costs £10”. The top-ranked r/ukvisa thread on this search repeats the same £10. So the fee has risen at least twice since March 2025. No gov.uk announcement surfaced to date either rise. Pay what gov.uk shows on the day you apply. That page warns other sites charge more, and that some imitate the government service.

Expat residents on a visa-national passport: the Standard Visitor visa

£135 for up to 6 months, fingerprints at VFS Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and a gov.uk decision target of 3 weeks. Most expat residents still need a visa. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino and Egyptian passports all sit on the UK visa national list, checked 21 July 2026. Length of residence does not move you off it.

The fee is where sources clash, and this clash has a date. gov.uk shows £135 for the up-to-6-months visa, checked 21 July 2026. UAE applicants reported £115 from 2024 into 2026, and our UK visit visa pillar still quotes that reported figure, flagged there as not re-verified live. Gulf News reported on 24 March 2025 that the six-month fee would rise from £115 to £127 on 9 April 2025. gov.uk then showed £135 when we checked on 21 July 2026. So £115 is two rises out of date, not a cheaper option. The full fee history, the separate VFS bill and the dirham conversion sit on UK visit visa fees and processing. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before travel, checked 21 July 2026. A refusal does not refund the fee.

Speed beats the target. One applicant gave biometrics at VFS Abu Dhabi on Thursday 2 July 2026 and was approved on Wednesday 8 July 2026 — 4 working days, standard service (r/ukvisa, 10 July 2026).

A cover letter or itinerary that reads as machine-written is now a live refusal signal. One Schengen applicant’s ChatGPT-formatted plan was read as “template like” (r/SchengenVisa, 10 May 2026). Write yours plainly. The pack sits on UK visit visa documents from the UAE.

The ETA costs 6.75 times less and lands about a working week sooner. It buys no less time in the country: both cap you at 6 months. Every figure below came off gov.uk on 21 July 2026.

The trap: an ETA is not a visa, and your Emirates ID does not qualify you for one

Not one UAE document makes you ETA-eligible, checked 21 July 2026. gov.uk exempts people with permission to live, work or study in the UK. Not in the UAE. A residence visa gives you nothing here. Neither does an Emirates ID, and neither does a Golden Visa. This error costs a cancelled trip, not a £20 fee. Who cannot use the ETA: visa nationals, plus British and Irish citizens, who travel on their own passports.

The second half runs the other way. An ETA authorises travel, not entry. gov.uk puts it plainly: it “does not guarantee entry to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man”. You cannot work, claim public funds or marry on one.

Then the line most explainers miss. gov.uk advises anyone with a criminal record, or a past refusal of entry to the UK, to consider a Standard Visitor visa instead — even when their passport makes them ETA-eligible. Transit runs on its own rule: an ETA to pass through border control, none if you stay airside.
