India Visa From Dubai (2026): The Route Your Passport Decides

If you hold an Indian passport, you need no visa to enter India — this page is for everyone else in the UAE. Your passport, not your Emirates ID, sets the route. An e-Visa if your nationality is eligible. A regular sticker visa at an application centre if your passport is barred from the e-Visa, or you need longer. An OCI card if you are of Indian origin. A conditional visa-on-arrival if you are an Emirati national. And from 1 July 2026, those centres are run by Alhind, not BLS. Every figure below carries the date we checked it.

Do UAE residents need a visa for India? Your passport decides — Indian citizens none, almost everyone else yes

An Indian citizen needs no visa for their own country. Almost every other UAE resident does. The residence visa in your passport lets you live in and re-enter the UAE. It buys you nothing at Indian immigration. What Indian immigration reads is the passport itself.

That is why the searches around this page keep colliding. “Do UAE residents need a visa for India?” sits next to “Is India visa free for Dubai?” in the same results. Both come from non-Indian residents and Emirati nationals, not from Indian citizens. The confusion is live because no page forks the answer by passport. This one does. The rest of the page is four routes — e-Visa, sticker visa, OCI and a conditional visa-on-arrival — each with its own fee and its own date.

The three routes: e-Visa, sticker visa, or an OCI card — the fork by passport and origin

Four routes, set by one thing: your passport and your origin. The table below is the whole decision. Read down the first column to your own status, then take the row. The fees are dated in the sections that follow; the verify path is the source you check before you pay.

The fork is passport and origin, never residence. A British engineer and a Pakistani engineer can live on the same Dubai street, hold the same residence visa, and take different routes to Delhi. The e-Visa: indianvisaonline.gov.in is the only official portal — fee, validity and designated airports

There is exactly one official e-Visa portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in. The fee is set by your passport nationality, not your residence. The official country-wise e-Tourist chart, dated 9 July 2026 and read on 21 July 2026, prices a UAE national at USD 25 for the 30-day visa, USD 40 for one year and USD 200 for five years. A 3% bank charge is added on top.

The 30-day e-Tourist visa allows multiple entries and cannot be extended. The one-year and five-year versions allow multiple entries, capped at 180 days of stay per calendar year. e-Business and e-Medical visas run on the same portal for other trip purposes.

Read the fee by the passport you hold, not the country you live in:

Here is the trap the portal cannot fix for you. Around the real government site sit lookalike pages — “.org” and “.com” markup sites that charge a “service fee” on top of the state fee and rank on the same searches. The confusion is documented in the community. A UAE resident on an Indian passport heading to Armenia wrote that her travel agency first said she was eligible visa-free, “then advised me to apply for an e-visa just to avoid any possible issue at boarding” (r/armenia, 21 May 2026). That is the native fear here: rumour versus official, and the boarding desk in the middle. For an India e-Visa, apply only at indianvisaonline.gov.in, and check the URL before you type a card number.

The e-Visa is valid for entry at India’s designated ports only. Secondary trackers reported 33 designated airports and a list of notified seaports as of mid-2026; the current list is on the portal, and that is the figure to confirm before booking. Print the approval — the “ok to board” check happens at the airline desk, not at immigration.

Not e-Visa-eligible, or staying longer: the India application centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah

From 1 July 2026, India’s visa, passport, OCI and attestation services in the UAE are run by Alhind Tours and Travels LLC — not BLS International. Gulf News and Khaleej Times reported the handover across 16 centres in all seven emirates: in Dubai, Bur Dubai and Dubai Investment Park; in Sharjah, Al Majaz and Rolla; six in the Abu Dhabi region including Al Ain. Alhind quoted an all-inclusive Dh19 per transaction.

This matters because the search results are now stale. blsinternational.com still ranks twice in the top results for this query, and VFS Global ranks too. Neither holds the India contract in the UAE today. VFS Global never did here — it operates other missions and shows up on the same searches. BLS held the work until 30 June 2026, then lost it: Gulf News and Khaleej Times reported that India’s Ministry of External Affairs had barred BLS from government tenders for two years in October 2025, and that the UAE contract was awarded to Alhind on 21 April 2026. If a page tells you to book at a BLS centre for an India visa in the UAE, it is out of date. Confirm the current centre on the mission website before you travel to one.

Who your mission is depends on where you live. The Consulate General of India in Dubai covers Dubai and the northern emirates. The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi covers Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. You use the application centre that reports to your mission.

The sticker route is where you go when the e-Visa is closed to you — a Pakistani passport, a diplomatic passport, a category the e-Visa does not cover — or when you need a longer or different visa. The centre publishes the checklist and the appointment mechanics; check its current page, because those move. One caution from other visa routes: caseworkers now flag cover letters that read as machine-written. If a sticker application asks for a covering letter, write it yourself. A templated document is a flag, not a shortcut.

Of Indian origin on a foreign passport: OCI vs repeated e-Visas — the long-game comparison

If you are of Indian origin on a foreign passport, the choice is one-off cost versus lifelong access. An OCI card costs about USD 275 plus a centre service charge, once, and never expires. A five-year e-Tourist visa costs USD 200 for most nationalities, capped at 180 days a year, and you buy it again every five years. Over a decade of visits, the OCI is cheaper and unconditional; for a single trip, the e-Visa is faster.

The OCI is a lifelong entry document for people of Indian origin and their spouses. You enter India on the OCI card together with your foreign passport — no per-trip visa, no 180-day annual cap, no fee at the gate. From 1 May 2026, under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, the OCI is issued as a digital e-OCI credential and the physical card is optional. These OCI figures are cited from published mission and tracker text, dated 21 July 2026; the fee and eligibility on the Embassy of India OCI page are the verify path, because origin rules and the exact fee move by mission.

So run it as a decision, not a default. Travelling to India for years, or for family who live there? The OCI removes the visa from every future trip, with no 180-day cap. Going once, or staying well under 180 days a year on a foreign passport? A repeat e-Visa is the lighter path, and the 180-day annual cap is the line most people hit first.

UAE nationals: the visa-on-arrival that only works with a previous Indian visa in your history

An Emirati national gets a visa-on-arrival for India only if they have already held an Indian visa. The official Visa-on-Arrival page states the scheme is for UAE nationals who earlier obtained an e-Visa or a regular Indian visa. A first-time Emirati traveller does not get it at the airport — they apply for an e-Visa or a regular visa in advance, and use the on-arrival facility on later trips. Read on 21 July 2026.

The conditions the listicles skip are all on that same page. The visa-on-arrival runs at six airports only: Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. It covers stays up to 60 days, for tourism, business, conference or medical purposes. The fee is INR 2,000, or the equivalent in foreign currency, per passenger, including children. Pakistan-origin UAE nationals are excluded from the scheme.

This is where “OK to board” bites hardest. A first-time Emirati traveller counting on a visa-on-arrival can be turned away at the Dubai check-in desk, because the airline has no prior-visa record to see. The document the desk looks for is route-specific: a printed e-Visa approval, a sticker visa in the passport, an OCI card with a foreign passport, or — for the visa-on-arrival — evidence of a previous Indian visa in your history. Boarding, not immigration, is where the check first happens. Carry the document that matches your route.
