UAE Residence Visa Cancellation 2026: MOHRE First, ICP Second — and Your Grace Period Starts the Day It Is Cancelled
Cancelling a UAE residence visa is the formal closing of your residency file, and on the employment route it is two procedures at two authorities in a fixed order — not one. Doing them out of order does not fail loudly. It simply does not proceed, which is how a “cancelled” visa turns out to be half-cancelled weeks later.
The second thing to get right is the clock. Cancellation starts the same grace period that expiry does, from the cancellation date.
The order on an employment visa

The labour file closes before the immigration file does.
Step | Authority | What happens |
|---|---|---|
1 | MOHRE | The employer applies to cancel the labour contract and labour card. The employee also signs this application. |
2 | ICP | The employer then applies for the visa cancellation itself. |

Your signature on step 1 is worth understanding properly. It is not a formality — it is a checkpoint. A company cannot complete the labour-side cancellation without the employee signing, which means you are a participant in your own cancellation rather than a spectator.
That cuts both ways. It protects you from a silent cancellation. It also means an employee who refuses to sign, or who has already left the country, becomes the bottleneck in a process their employer needs to close.
The two channels
Cancellation runs either through a registered typing centre or online through the smart services system, logging in with UAE Pass or a username.
The online route is the faster one when your documents are in order and your sponsor is cooperative. The typing centre earns its fee when they are not — when the sponsor’s documents need collecting in person, or when the file has a complication that a form does not have a field for.
The documents for an in-country cancellation
Four items, and half of them belong to someone else.
Document | Whose |
|---|---|
Application form (Amer centre or the GDRFA Dubai app) | — |
Original passport | The sponsored person |
Original Emirates ID | The sponsored person |
Original passport | The sponsor |
Original Emirates ID | The sponsor |
The sponsor’s originals are the line people miss. Not copies, not scans — the sponsor is materially involved in the transaction. If your sponsor is a company, that means coordinating with whoever holds the company’s PRO documents; if it is a family member, it means their physical documents on the day.
Plan the appointment around the sponsor’s availability, not your own.
Your grace period starts on cancellation
The tiers are the same ones that govern expiry, and they run from the cancellation date.
Grace period | Who gets it |
|---|---|
180 days | Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their families; widowed or divorced residents; students after completing studies; foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens |
90 days | Skilled workers in levels 1–3; property owners |
60 days | Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host |
This matters more on cancellation than on expiry, because cancellation is usually unplanned. A job ending mid-contract cancels a permit that had two years left — and the 60-day tier applies to the cancellation date, not to the date the permit would have run to. The AED 50 daily fine begins after your own tier closes, exactly as our residence visa renewal guide sets out for the expiry case.
What cancellation takes with it
Your Emirates ID does not survive the visa. It is tied to residency status, which is why the Emirates ID stops being a valid document when the residence permit is cancelled, not when the card’s own printed date arrives.
Practically, that means the accounts and services that use the ID as identification — banking, telecom, tenancy — are on the same clock as the visa. Closing or transferring them is easier while the ID is still live than after.
Where cancellations go wrong
Three failure modes account for most of the trouble.
Going to ICP first. The labour file has to close at MOHRE before the visa cancellation proceeds. Starting at the immigration end wastes the trip.
Assuming the sponsor only needs to agree. They need to hand over original documents. Verbal agreement does not move the file.
Counting the grace period from the wrong date. It runs from cancellation, and cancellation is often earlier than the expiry date you had in your calendar. Residents who count from the printed expiry can be a month into a fine before they check.
How to verify this before you file
Procedures and document lists differ by emirate and by permit type, and the service pages are the authority.
Read ICP’s cancellation of residency permits service for the federal process, and your emirate’s directorate for the local document list — Dubai publishes cancellation of all types of residence permits and a plain-language what are the residence cancellation procedures page. Where the two disagree, the authority processing your file governs.
If a step here no longer matches what an authority tells you, tell us and we will correct the page — we date every rule for exactly this reason.
