UAE Visit Visa 2026: Which of the Five Entry Routes Is Actually Yours

UAE Visit Visa 2026: Which of the Five Entry Routes Is Actually Yours
Six of the top ten pages for uae visit visa describe one route each. Emirates describes the airline visa. GDRFA describes the sponsored visit visa. ICP describes the entry permit. None tells you which one is yours. This page routes you first, in under a minute, then explains each product with the date we checked it.
Which of the five entry routes applies to you
Five routes lead into the UAE, and most travellers qualify for exactly one. A free visa on arrival covers 70-plus passports. Everyone else pre-arranges an entry permit, flies on an airline-issued visa, transits for 48 to 96 hours, or gets sponsored by a UAE resident. Pick by your passport and your purpose. This route-decision block resolves in under a minute, and all figures were checked 20 July 2026.
Read the router as passport first, purpose second.
- Free visa on arrival. Hold a US, UK, EU or Canadian passport? You get a free 30-day or 90-day visa on arrival. No advance form. The passport must be valid for six months. Travel.state.gov and the GDRFA VoA page both state this, checked 20 July 2026. flydubai confirms the free 30-day permit is issued at Dubai International Airport.
- Visa on arrival by exemption. An Indian passport still lets you land on arrival if you hold a valid US visa, a Green Card, or UK or EU residence. The stay is 14 days for Dh100, or 60 days for Dh250. uae-embassy.org lists this route, checked 20 July 2026.
- Pre-arranged entry permit. Not on either list? File before you fly. GDRFA Dubai and ICP both issue the permit online. This is the standard 30-day or 60-day visit visa, single or multiple entry.
- Airline-issued visa or transit. Emirates, Etihad and flydubai file the permit for their own passengers. A 48-hour transit visa is free. A 96-hour transit visa is paid. Etihad and Emirates run both, checked 20 July 2026. Emirates also lists a 14-day visa on arrival at USD 63 for eligible passengers.
- Sponsored by a resident. A UAE resident with an Emirates ID sponsors a relative or friend on GDRFA’s “visit visa for a relative or friend”. A visit visa sponsored by a resident now asks for proof of the host relationship.

Five routes lead into the UAE, and most travellers qualify for exactly one; pick by your passport and your purpose
One 2026 change widened route 2, and it is confirmed by a primary source. MOFA published on 25 June 2026 that six more passports qualify for a visa on arrival: Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa. The condition is a residence permit from a listed country, such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand or an EU state. A Filipino traveller, for example, now lands on a 14-day permit for Dh100 or a 60-day permit for Dh250.
To answer the question the market keeps asking: yes, the UAE is still issuing tourist visas. The 2026 changes widened who qualifies on arrival, they did not pause it. US, UK, Canadian and EU passport holders stay on the free visa-on-arrival route with no advance application, per travel.state.gov, checked 20 July 2026.
If two routes seem to fit, the cheaper one usually wins. A free visa on arrival beats a paid pre-arranged permit every time you qualify for it. Our visa-on-arrival eligibility page checks your passport against the exemption list. The transit visa page sorts the 48-hour and 96-hour products by layover length.
Visit visa, tourist visa, e-visa, entry permit: one product, four words
Four words name the same document, and the mismatch causes real errors. Before you land, the government calls it an entry permit. The market calls it a visit visa, a tourist visa or an e-visa. Once immigration stamps you in, that permit becomes your visa. The confusion is not academic — it decides which portal card you open.
The registers split cleanly. Here is the map.
You say | The government says | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
Visit visa | "Issuance of a visit visa" | GDRFA Dubai service card |
Tourist visa | "Issuance of a single-entry tourist visa" | GDRFA / ICP service card |
E-visa | "Issuance of a Visa" (entry permit) | ICP portal |
Visa extension | "Extension of entry permit validity" | ICP / GDRFA card |
Read the third row twice. ICP titles its card “Issuance of a Visa”, yet its extension card calls the very same thing an “entry permit”. One authority, two words, one product. So when a form asks whether you hold an entry permit and you answer no because you think you bought a “tourist visa”, you have just contradicted your own application.
The second trap is the two clocks, the visa validity vs length of stay confusion. Validity is the window to enter the country on the permit. Length of stay is the number of days you get once inside. They are different numbers on the same PDF. A permit can be valid to enter for weeks yet grant only 30 days of stay. Overstays happen when a traveller watches the wrong date. Check both lines on your issued permit. If a word on the page is unfamiliar, the glossary defines entry permit, Amer centre and grace period in plain terms.
30-day vs 60-day vs 5-year multi-entry: what you actually get
Three durations cover almost every visit. A 30-day visit visa and a 60-day visit visa each come as single entry or as multiple entry. The 5-year multi-entry tourist visa lets any nationality self-sponsor. It grants up to 90 days a trip, extendable once to 180 days, and stays usable for five years. The right one depends on how long you stay and how often you come back.
The short-term products are the common pair. A 30-day single-entry visit visa suits one trip. A 60-day version suits a longer family stay. Multiple entry matters only if you leave and re-enter inside the window. u.ae states that these short visas are usually filed by a UAE-based sponsor, an airline or a hotel, checked 20 July 2026. Single entry suits a one-off trip; multiple entry only earns its higher price if you leave and re-enter inside the window.
The 5-year visa is a different animal, and its headline is misread constantly. It does not let you live in the UAE for five years. Gulf News, in its 5-year tourist visa explainer cited by Google’s own answer box, states the rule. You get up to 90 days per visit. That extends by another 90, and no more than 180 days inside the country in a single year, checked 20 July 2026. The five years is how long the visa stays usable, not how long you may stay.
Extensions sit on top of all three. Google’s AI Overview for uae visit visa extension says most visit and tourist visas extend 30 days at a time without leaving, up to a total of 120 days, checked 20 July 2026. That figure is a ceiling, not a promise. The price of each extension is contested across sources. We keep every extension and overstay figure on one page so they carry one set of dates — see the fees page.
What it costs, in one line
Government charges for a 30-day single-entry tourist visa are AED 272 at GDRFA Dubai, checked 20 July 2026. That is AED 252 in fee plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham. Through an Amer centre, the published all-in price runs about AED 650 — roughly 2.4x the government figure. The gap is service, not fraud. Whether 5% VAT sits on top is itself contested. The GDRFA card shows no VAT line, while Amer centres say VAT is already in the price. The fees page prints each figure with its VAT treatment, dated.
We publish no price of our own, and we hold one fee table for the whole site so the numbers never drift apart across pages. It compares the official GDRFA and ICP figures against published Amer-centre prices, line by line, each with its check date, including the transit, extension and overstay charges. It lives at /en/ae/uae-visa/fees/. Every other page, including this one, links there and states no fee table of its own.
Timeline: what happens between paying and boarding
Two to five working days is what almost every competitor prints, and it hides the real gate. Payment clears in minutes. The entry permit PDF issues in days. Then the airline runs its own ok-to-board check, and that check can stop a permit the government already approved. We found no incumbent, and no community post, that publishes a full dated inbound timeline. So here is the sequence, stage by stage, in the corpus’s own arrow format: Apply and pay (Day 0) → Permit PDF issued (Day 1 to Day 3) → Airline ok-to-board (before you fly) → Stamped in at the counter.
Day 0 sets the money clock. You submit on GDRFA, ICP, an airline portal or through an agency, and the payment confirmation screen is your receipt. Keep it. A silent upload failure here is the top cause of a stalled application, so the apply-online walkthrough lists the file specs that fail quietly. Day 1 to Day 3 issues the permit. The entry permit arrives as a PDF, sometimes same day, sometimes on the fifth working day. This document is the “e-visa” everyone means. The ok-to-board check comes next, and it is the real gate. The airline verifies your permit against its own system. A legally valid permit can still be refused at the desk. The carrier is stricter than immigration, because it pays the fine if it boards you wrongly. The counter sets the last clock. The immigration officer stamps you in and the permit becomes your stay — your length-of-stay clock starts there, not on the day you paid.

The airline runs its own ok-to-board check before you fly, and that check can stop a permit the government already approved
Two real dated cases show why the range is not a guarantee. A traveller on r/UAE wrote on 7 July 2026 that his change-of-status visit visa was “rejected done by my agency” on the same day, at Sharjah airport, with no reason given. Separately, a traveller on r/dubai wrote on 20 May 2026 that overstay fines had been “updated on May 13 for everyone” with no stated cause. The traveller was told to explain it to the airport officer directly. Same route, same country, wildly different days. Build in slack before a fixed flight, and never book a non-refundable ticket against a permit that has not issued.
What gets an application rejected before it reaches immigration
Most rejections never reach a UAE immigration officer. The agency’s system, the sponsor’s documents, or a nationality screen stops the file first. The applicant sees “rejected”, no code, no reason. That is the failure mode the airline pages never describe, and it hits strong, well-documented profiles as often as thin ones.
Take a real profile block from the corpus. Indian passport, UAE resident with an Emirates ID, hosting a partner for a 10-day birthday visit, Ejari and Emirates ID uploaded. GDRFA then asked, in the applicant’s words on 25 June 2026, “what’s the proof of relationship with the host?” For a spouse or parent that is a certificate. For a friend or partner there is no document that proves it, and the file stalls. Gulf News confirmed GDRFA had clarified the relative-or-friend visit visa rules, and this host-relationship check is the sharp edge of that clarification.
Three more triggers fire before immigration ever sees you. The first is nationality screening at the desk: amer247, a GDRFA-partner centre, warns applicants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan, Nigeria and Uganda to verify by WhatsApp before filing — an operational screen, not a published rule. The second is the wrong word on the form. Answer “no entry permit” because you believe you hold a “tourist visa”, and you have contradicted your own application, as the terminology section above shows. The third is recognisably AI-generated documents. Processing desks now flag itineraries and invitation letters that read as machine-written, and on a friend-or-partner visit a generated invitation triggers the exact host-relationship doubt GDRFA is already probing. Write your supporting documents yourself, in your own words.
One rumour deserves a direct answer. A Reddit user wrote on 18 June 2026 that “everyone is saying, visas for Pakistanis are closed”. We found no ICP or GDRFA notice announcing a freeze on Pakistani visit visas as of 20 July 2026. What exists is the amer-desk screening above — extra verification for some nationalities, filed case by case, not a published closure. The gap between “closed” and “screened harder” is the whole story, and no incumbent states it.
Rules that changed recently, and what is still unclear
The 2026 visit visa rules split into confirmed vs rumoured rule changes, and that split is the point of this section. Two 2026 changes carry a government source, and two circulate with none. A rule confirmed by MOFA is not the same as a rule a phone agent mentioned, and printing them at the same weight is how this market stays confused. Here is each change, ranked by how firmly it is established, with its source and date.
| Change | Who states it | Date | How solid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa on arrival widened to 6 more passports (Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Kenya, South Africa) holding a listed residence permit | MOFA media hub | 25 June 2026 | Confirmed — primary gov source |
| Relative-or-friend visit visa now asks for proof of the host relationship | GDRFA, via Gulf News clarification | Reported June 2026 | Confirmed — wording still vague for non-family hosts |
| Overstay fines recalculated retroactively "on May 13 for everyone" | GDRFA phone agents, relayed by travellers | 13 May 2026 | Unconfirmed — no published reason |
| "Visas for Pakistanis are closed" | Reddit reports + amer-desk WhatsApp screening | 18 June 2026 | Rumour — desk practice, no gov notice |
| Visit visas extend 30 days at a time, up to 120 days total | Google AI Overview | Checked 20 July 2026 | Secondary — fee per extension contested |
Read the table top to bottom before you act on any single row. The MOFA change is the only one you can quote to an airline with confidence. The GDRFA host-relationship check is real but still elastic — a friend-visit case can turn on which officer reviews it. The overstay recalculation and the Pakistani-visa rumour both lack a primary source, which means they are things to verify, not facts to plan around. Where a figure moves without notice, the safest move is to open the exact GDRFA or ICP card for your product on the day you file. Passport-specific eligibility, which shifts most often, lives on our by-passport page.
