UAE Green Visa 2026: The Three Routes, the AED 360,000 Freelancer Wall, and the 180-Day Grace Nobody Mentions

The UAE Green Visa is a five-year, renewable residence permit granted through self-sponsorship — no employer and no national sponsor holds your file. That single structural fact is the whole product. Everything else on this page is the price of admission.

Three categories qualify: skilled employees, freelancers and the self-employed, and investors or business partners. The thresholds differ sharply, and one of them stops most applicants before they start.

The eligibility matrix: three routes, the exact threshold

Skilled employees need AED 15,000 a month. Freelancers need AED 360,000 a year — which is AED 30,000 a month, double the salaried bar. Investors face no published federal figure at all.

The skill-level requirement is the quiet gate on the salaried route. MOHRE classifies occupations into levels, and only levels 1 to 3 qualify. Your salary can clear AED 15,000 while your job title sits at level 4 — and the file fails on the classification, not the money.

Why the freelancer route is harder than the salaried one

A freelancer needs AED 30,000 a month, sustained across two years. A skilled employee needs AED 15,000 a month, right now. The self-employed route asks for exactly double, and asks it retroactively.

This inverts the usual assumption. The Green Visa is marketed as the freelancer’s residence permit, and it is the only self-sponsored route open to them — but the bar is set where a majority of working freelancers in the UAE do not reach it. Two consecutive years above AED 360,000 is not a starting freelancer’s income. It is an established practice with a client book.

If your income sits below that line, the Green Visa is not your route. The realistic paths are a freelance permit with a free-zone visa attached, or employer sponsorship — neither of which is self-sponsored, and both of which tie your residence to a third party.

The 180-day grace period is the real feature

A Green Residency holder gets 180 days in the country after the permit expires or is cancelled. That is the top of a three-tier scale — a permit issued with a guarantor or host gets 60 days.

The fine of AED 50 per day starts the day after your tier’s window closes — not the day the permit expired.

This is the part that rarely makes the marketing copy, and it is worth more than the extra years to anyone whose income is project-shaped. Six months is enough time to close a contract, find the next one, restructure a company, or leave on your own schedule. Thirty days is not — thirty days is a scramble.

The grace period is also what makes self-sponsorship real rather than nominal. On a guarantor-issued permit, losing the job starts a two-month clock. On a Green Visa, losing your largest client starts a six-month one. What it costs

The permit fee is modest. The qualification is the expensive part.

Read that table narrowly. These are Dubai/GDRFA figures read on 28 July 2026, and residence-permit fees vary by emirate and by whether you file from inside or outside the country. They also exclude the medical fitness test, Emirates ID issuance and any typing-centre charge — the costs that actually differ between applicants. Confirm the current total with the authority handling your emirate before budgeting.

Green Visa or Golden Visa?

If you clear the Golden Visa thresholds, take the Golden Visa. It runs 5 or 10 years against the Green Visa’s 5, and nothing about the Green Visa outranks it.

The Green Visa exists for a specific band: people who earn well but not Golden-well. What can go wrong

Three failure modes account for most refusals on this route, and none of them are about money.

The occupational classification is the first. Skill levels 1 to 3 qualify; level 4 does not. Applicants read the salary figure, clear it, and never check the classification of their own job title.

The income evidence is the second. The freelancer route asks for two years of income, not a good current year. Bank statements that show AED 360,000 over the last twelve months and AED 180,000 the year before do not satisfy a two-year test, and there is no partial credit.

The permit itself is the third. A MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit is a prerequisite, not a formality you attach later — and a free-zone freelance licence is not automatically the same instrument. Confirm which permit your licence actually is before you file.

How to verify this before you file

Every figure on this page has an expiry date. Visa thresholds in the UAE move, and they move without announcement.

Read icp.gov.ae’s Green Residency page for the federal position, then the GDRFA service page for your emirate — Dubai publishes the high-skilled worker and self-employment routes separately, with different document lists. Where the two disagree, the emirate-level authority is the one processing your file.

For the occupational skill level, ask MOHRE directly with your exact job title as written on your contract. The classification is not something to infer from a job description.
