Dubai eVisa: How to Apply for a UAE Visit Visa Online, Screen by Screen (2026)

There is no single Dubai eVisa portal. You apply through one of three channels: ICP Smart Services for every emirate, the GDRFA smart services portal for Dubai, or an airline application portal. Which one is right depends on who sponsors the visa, not on the trip you booked. This page walks the screens and names the file specs that fail silently. It shows what a real confirmation looks like. Every step was checked on 20 July 2026.

ICP Smart Services vs GDRFA vs the airline portal: which one you should be on

Use GDRFA smart services if you or your sponsor is in Dubai. Use ICP Smart Services for the other six emirates. Use an airline application portal only if you fly with Etihad, Emirates or flydubai and want the visa bundled with the ticket. u.ae confirms all three channels, checked 20 July 2026.

Dubai eVisa: How to Apply for a UAE Visit Visa Online, Screen by Screen (2026)

A resident once posted that the UAE “doesn’t have an official platform to apply for e-visas” and that “you’ve got to apply through private agents.” He was half right. There is no consumer Dubai eVisa you buy the way you buy a Turkey or India e-visa. The official channels exist, but a visit visa needs a sponsor, so the channel follows the sponsor.

If you hold an Emirates ID and you are bringing in family or a friend, you are the sponsor, and you file it yourself. A visitor with no UAE tie cannot self-file a visit visa. That person routes through an airline, a hotel or a licensed agent, who files it for them. u.ae states this plainly: UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas.

The self-sponsored route has a gate. u.ae lists a USD 4,000 bank balance over six months, UAE health insurance valid for 180 days, and a return ticket for the 5-year multiple-entry visa, checked 20 July 2026. Fees for each product sit on our fee page, the only fee table on this site.

Before you start: the exact file specs that fail uploads

Three files fail most often. A passport photo on any background except white. A black-and-white passport scan instead of colour. A passport with under six months of validity. The amer247 document list, checked 20 July 2026, states all three. The portal rejects the file and does not tell you why.

Fix each one before you upload. The photo is a studio-type digital photo on a plain white background. amer247 spells it out on three separate forms. No filter, no phone selfie. The portal states its own photo dimensions and white background rule on the upload field; read them on the screen before you pick the file.

The passport scan must be in colour, not black and white. Scan the bio-data page, the one with your photo and the machine-readable zone. People upload the cover instead, and that is a silent upload failure. Keep all four corners in the frame. The passport scan format and file size limit are shown on the upload control, so match them before you attach.

The passport itself must be valid for at least six months; amer247 repeats this on more than a dozen forms. It is the one cause you cannot fix at upload time, so check it first.

The sponsored route needs the sponsor’s papers too. amer247 lists the sponsor’s Emirates ID, residence visa copy and passport copy, plus the applicant’s passport and photo. Then it lists the relationship proof, and here the list tells you something the government pages do not.

A spouse needs a marriage certificate, attested by UAE MOFA and translated into Arabic. A child or a parent needs a birth certificate on the same terms. There is no listed document for a friend or a partner. That gap is the wall a Dubai resident hit when GDRFA asked her, about her visiting boyfriend, “what’s the proof of relationship with the host?” She could not answer, because no accepted document covers that relationship. If you host a friend, expect the question and plan for it before you pay.

One more filter runs quietly. amer247 tells applicants from twelve nationalities — Pakistan, Bangladesh, Uganda, Sudan, Nigeria, Lebanon, Libya, Mozambique, Ghana, Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Cameroon — to verify on WhatsApp before applying online. This is why “visas for Pakistanis are closed” circulates. They are not closed, only flagged for a manual check first.

The application, screen by screen

Six screens stand between you and a submitted application: account registration or sign-in, service selection, applicant details, document upload, review, and payment. On ICP Smart Services and the GDRFA smart services portal the order is the same, and this online flow is what most residents call the Dubai eVisa. With your files ready, budget 20 to 30 minutes for a first application.

Screen 1, sign in. Register an account or sign in with UAE Pass. On the UAEICP app the sign-in is the same as the web. For a sponsored visit visa, the sponsor’s account and Emirates ID drive the application, not the visitor’s.

Screen 2, select the exact service. Pick the precise product name. A single-entry visit visa, a tourist visa and the 5-year multiple-entry visa are different services with different fees and documents. Choosing the wrong one means a returned application later. The product list maps to our fee page.

Screen 3, applicant details. Type the name and passport number exactly as the passport machine-readable zone shows them. Match the spelling and the name order character for character. A mismatch here is the single most common reason an application comes back.

Screen 4, upload documents. Attach the white-background photo, the colour bio-data scan and the sponsor papers from the section above. Confirm each file loaded; do not assume a grey thumbnail means success.

Screen 5, review. Read the summary. Check the name, passport number, nationality and the visa dates. This is the last screen you can edit for free.

Screen 6, pay. Payment is next, and it is where people misread the result.

Payment: what a successful confirmation looks like

A successful payment returns three things on one payment confirmation screen: an application reference number, a paid status, and a transaction receipt you can download. amer247 and the smart portals take Visa and Mastercard in AED. If all you get is an email that says “received,” the application is filed, not approved.

Write the application reference number down before you close the tab, and download the transaction receipt. That number is how any escalation contact finds your file.

Overpayment worry is the loudest thread in this niche. One resident paid USD 370 through an online agent for himself and his wife, then asked whether he had “paid too much and above market rates.” That is about AED 679 each at the pegged rate. The fix is not a cheaper agent. The fix is a receipt that splits the government fee from the service charge and the VAT. Ask for that split before you pay, and check it against our fee page.

After submission: statuses, ok-to-board, and what silence means

No UAE government page publishes a fixed processing time. Agencies advertise 3 to 4 working days for a standard visit visa and 24 to 48 hours for express. You are cleared to travel only when the issued permit PDF is in hand, not when payment clears. The clock below is an agency-advertised window, dated 20 July 2026, not a state service level.

Day 0: application submitted and paid, status “under process” → Day 1: the file sits in the queue → Day 2 to 4: the entry permit PDF is issued for a standard visit visa. Express compresses the same run into 24 to 48 hours.

An application status not moving past that window rarely means it is lost. It usually means manual review: a flagged nationality or a document query. Your escalation contact is the channel that filed it, whether your Amer centre, the airline, or GDRFA and ICP support. Use the reference number.

Then there is the border. A resident on the last day of his grace period flew an airport-to-airport run to Muscat and back to change status. His agency-filed visit visa was rejected on arrival at Sharjah, with no reason given, and he waited five hours. The lesson holds for everyone: a visit visa can be refused at the counter even after the portal shows it issued. Carry the permit PDF, and do not book the onward leg tight.

If you are already inside the UAE on a visit visa, check your fines balance before you fly. A traveller who relied on the overstay-fine waiver was hit by a retroactive charge, and GDRFA told him “the fines got updated on May 13 [2026] for everyone” without a stated reason. A waiver you counted on can reverse with no notice. The overstay rules and figures sit on our fee page.

The seven mistakes that cause a resubmission

Seven errors send an application back, and six are avoidable before you pay. The seventh — a recognizably AI-generated cover letter or itinerary — is new in 2026 and getting people refused. Resubmission after a returned application costs you the queue time, so clear all seven first.

  • Name mismatch. The form does not match the passport machine-readable zone. Type it character for character.
  • Wrong page scanned. The cover instead of the bio-data page. Scan the page with your photo and the MRZ.
  • Short passport validity. Under six months means renew before you apply.
  • Photo background. Coloured or patterned fails. Use plain white, studio-type.
  • Black-and-white passport scan. Upload it in colour.
  • Flagged nationality skipped. One of the twelve listed nationalities submitted without the verification step. Confirm with the centre first.
  • AI-generated supporting documents. A cover letter or itinerary that reads as machine-written. Write it yourself, specific to your trip.

That last one earns its own line. A traveller applying from Dubai was refused after the consulate judged her itinerary “template like”; she had used ChatGPT to format it. That was a Schengen application, not a UAE visit visa, but the signal is the same across desks in 2026: recognizably AI-generated supporting documents draw suspicion. Keep any cover letter and itinerary in your own words, with real bookings and real names.

How this page was checked. Every step was reviewed on 20 July 2026. Channels and eligibility come from the u.ae tourist visa page, updated 20 July 2026, which we linked and read. Document requirements, payment methods and the flagged-nationality list come from the amer247 sponsored-visit and tourist visa forms, which we linked and read the same day. ICP and GDRFA are named as the official channels; we link their portals but did not open every service card, so we do not quote card-level figures here. Real cases are quoted from public Reddit threads with their dates. The editorial desk maintains this page. Our sourcing rules and correction log live at editorial policy.

Questions people ask about applying for a UAE visa online

FAQ

Is the UAE still issuing tourist visas?
Yes. The u.ae tourist visa page and the amer247 application forms were both live and taking applications on 20 July 2026. Some nationalities need an extra verification step before applying, which is not the same as a closure. UAE visit and tourist visas were being issued through ICP, GDRFA, airlines and licensed agents.
Which portal do I use to apply for a UAE visit visa online?
Use GDRFA smart services if you or your sponsor is in Dubai. Use ICP Smart Services for the other six emirates. Use an airline application portal only if you fly Etihad, Emirates or flydubai and want the visa bundled with the ticket. A tourist with no UAE sponsor usually applies through an airline, a hotel or a licensed agent.
What documents does a UAE visit visa need?
For a sponsored visit visa, amer247 lists the sponsor Emirates ID, residence visa and passport copy, the applicant passport valid at least 6 months, and one white-background studio photo. Relationship proof is attested and Arabic-translated: a marriage certificate for a spouse, a birth certificate for a child or parent. Checked 20 July 2026.
How long does a UAE visit visa take to process online?
No UAE government page publishes a fixed processing time. Agencies advertise 3 to 4 working days for a standard visit visa and 24 to 48 hours for express. You are cleared to travel only when the issued permit PDF is in hand, not when payment clears.
Can I apply for a UAE visit visa myself, or do I need an agent?
A UAE resident can file a sponsored visit visa directly on ICP Smart Services or the GDRFA smart services portal. A visitor with no UAE sponsor applies through an airline, hotel or licensed agent, because a visit visa needs a sponsor or the self-sponsored 5-year product. u.ae states embassies do not issue tourist visas.
