Change Visit Visa to Employment Visa in the UAE: Exit or Stay, by Category (2026)

No UAE federal portal publishes the rule for changing your visa status inside the country. u.ae’s own fee page says it covers “rules for modifying visa status”. It then prints none. The clearest operating rule we found sits on a private Amer centre page, dated 25 March 2023. This page states who says what, and the date we checked each source.

Where the official sources disagree, and the date we checked each one

Three sources, three silences. u.ae claims to cover status changes, and does not. GDRFA offers a lookup tool, not a transaction. Only a private Amer centre states a rule, and its page is dated 25 March 2023. We read all three on 20 July 2026.

u.ae’s visa fees page says it “provides information on visa cost, fines for overstaying and rules for modifying visa status.” Read the page. There is no rule for modifying status. It points to the ICP and GDRFA service cards and stops.

GDRFA’s website carries a “Visa Status” tool. It checks “the validity of entry permits, residence cards, and establishment documents.” That is a lookup. It tells you what you already hold. It changes nothing.

The rule itself, exit-or-stay and the deadlines, appears only on amer247.com, a private Amer centre. That note reads “Updated on 25-03-2023”. It was unchanged when we read it. So the clearest published rule here is a commercial page, three years old. Treat it as a lead to verify, not as law.

What a change of status actually is, and why it is not a visa extension

A change of status swaps the visa you are on for a new one without leaving the UAE. It is a different transaction from an extension. An extension prolongs the same visit visa, 30 days up to 120 total. A change of status ends the visit visa and starts an employment or residence visa. Checked 20 July 2026.

Google’s AI Overview answers the phrase “without leaving the country” with that extension: 30 days, up to 120 days total, the same visit visa kept. It does not change your visa. An entry permit is the approval to enter or hold a status; its definition sits in our glossary. The extension buys more visitor days, and its cost lives on the fees page.

So the two are not the same product. To change a visit visa to an employment visa in the UAE, you swap the visa outright and stay in the country. Search “without leaving the country”, though, and you are often served the extension answer by mistake. If you plan to work, the extension is not your transaction.

Exit required or not: the answer by category, not in general

Category decides it, not a slogan. amer247’s note says “any foreign nationality in Dubai” can “easily change their visa status without exiting the country.” Its family-visa note, four pages on, contradicts that. Some holders “will need to exit the country.” Others can request a status change without exit. That is a special approval, not a right.

The clearest published change-of-status rule sits on a private Amer-centre page dated 25 March 2023 — treat it as a lead to verify.

So the honest answer forks by where you start:

The family-stamping note is where the “without exit” route is named as an approval. An approval can be refused. No government page states this fork. The single “easily, without exiting” sentence flattens it.

Your emirate decides the counter: GDRFA Dubai vs ICP’s six

Dubai routes a status change through GDRFA Dubai and its Amer centres. The other six emirates route through ICP. u.ae states this split for status lookups, checked 20 July 2026: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah sit with ICP. Dubai sits with GDRFA Dubai, also called DNRD.

u.ae publishes that split only for checking a visa, not for changing one. No page states which counter owns the status change itself. Dubai residents file through an Amer centre or typing centre. ICP smart services handle the rest. The gap shows in amer247’s own FAQ. It asks “Do we have services related to visas issued from Sharjah or other Emirates?” and never answers it.

The counter matters at the worst moment. Where you file, and where your file already sits, are not always the same emirate. A Dubai visa rejected at a Sharjah counter becomes another authority’s problem. Confirm the counter before you pay.

The clock: entry-permit approval, the 60-day window, then out of status

The clock starts when the entry permit is approved, not when you arrive. Six amer247 service pages carry the same line: “Once the Entry permit approved, please complete change status Immediately (If the Applicant is inside UAE).” An approved change of status then runs 60 days, per the family-stamping note dated 25 March 2023.

The clock: entry-permit approval opens a 60-day window to change in country or run an exit; miss it and you fall out of status.

Entry permit approved — Day 0 → change of status filed within days, before the visit visa or grace period expires → change of status approved, and a 60-day window opens → inside 60 days: Emirates ID, medical, insurance, then visa stamping → miss the window, and you are out of status, with the overstay fine running.

The job seeker route shows the trap in one line. After a job seeker visa is approved, amer247 says the holder must file a change of status of AED 730, because they are “currently in the country.” The approval is not the finish. It starts a second, timed transaction. ICP smart services and the Amer desk both file it. But the 60-day figure appears on neither government card. Treat it as the Amer desk’s number, and check your own permit.

Dependants: the hold, the deposit, and the cascade nobody warns you about

Your status change is the parent transaction. Every dependant you sponsor hangs off it. Cancel your own visa for a new job, and your dependants' visas do not simply wait. One Dubai resident put it plainly on r/DubaiJobs in June 2026: told to cancel his old visa first, “I had to put my mom’s visa (whom I sponsor) on a temporary hold.” The new employer then stalled a month and let him go.

You have two moves, and amer247 names both. You “either hold your dependents' visa or cancel and apply for a new visa.” A hold “is subject to special approval from the senior officer,” and depends on your “new designation and salary.” If approved, the family visa holds while you switch employer. If refused, you cancel each dependant’s visa and reapply.

Putting dependants on hold is not free. One Dubai Amer centre lists a holding visa at AED 512.90, checked 20 July 2026. It adds a AED 5,000 warranty deposit, and AED 100 for each dependant. It is marked “Only Possible change Job within Dubai.” Parents carry more: the same centre lists a AED 5,000 security deposit for each parent, checked the same day. The a2a “visa change flight”: what it costs when it goes wrong

A visa change flight, or a2a, is the other route. It is a same-day airport-to-airport trip, often to Muscat and back. It cancels your visit status and re-enters you on a fresh visit visa. No in-country filing. It buys more visitor days, and skips the entry-permit-first rule. That is why people use it.

It also fails in the open. One traveller flew an a2a visa change flight to Muscat on the last day of his grace period. Back at Sharjah airport, his new visit visa came up “as rejected done by my agency,” with no reason given. He wrote: “im here for so long nearly 5 hours I feel so dead inside and sad.” The rejection lands airside, with no status to fall back on.

Compare the two routes on what differs. An in-country status change needs an approved entry permit and a 60-day window, but it never puts you at an immigration desk with no status. The a2a flight needs no permit, but you hold the whole risk at the border, and the failure is same-day. One route fails on paper, at a counter. The other fails at a gate, with your bags.

The same change of status is quoted at four figures. Price is keyed to the category and the sponsor, not to the paperwork. amer247 lists Change Status — Company at AED 789.90, Family at AED 752.90, Sponsored Visit Visa at AED 732.90, and the job seeker change of status at AED 730. One caution before you hand over any document. Offer letters and support letters that read as machine-generated are flagged more often now. The pattern is punished elsewhere in this market: a template-looking itinerary drew a “visa shopping” refusal. A plain letter from a real employer beats a polished one.
