China Visa for Indians in the UAE 2026: India Is Not on the Visa-Free List — and the Dubai Centre Tests Your Residence Before Your Passport

For an Indian passport holder in the UAE, China is the destination where two separate gates apply — and the first one closes an option people keep hearing about.

China runs a unilateral visa-free policy covering 49 countries through 31 December 2026. India is not among them. Whatever you have read about visa-free entry to China does not apply to an Indian passport, and residence in the UAE does not change that.

The second gate is the one that surprises people: filing from Dubai means the centre examines your UAE residence before it examines anything about your trip.

The residence conditions at the Dubai centre

Non-local applicants — everyone who is not a UAE national — face three conditions that have nothing to do with nationality.

Condition

What is asked for

Residence age

A copy of a UAE residence visa issued six months ago

Sponsor consent

A NOC (no-objection letter) from your UAE sponsor

Jurisdiction

If your residence was issued under Abu Dhabi jurisdiction, a tenancy contract proving you live in the Dubai jurisdiction

The six-month rule is the one that reorders plans. An Indian professional who moved to Dubai this year cannot present a qualifying residence document yet, no matter how complete the rest of the file is. That is a start date you cannot negotiate, and it is worth checking before you book anything.

The NOC puts your employer on the critical path. It is not a document you can produce yourself, and the lead time is whatever your company’s HR takes plus the appointment.

The tourist visa document pack

Beyond residence, the tourist route asks for a specific set — and two items in it are more exacting than most countries require.

  • Passport with at least six months validity and more than two blank visa pages
  • Two recent colour photos, full face, bare head, 48mm × 33mm, taken within the last six months
  • An invitation letter from a Chinese travel agency or from an individual (with residential proof if from an individual)
  • Itinerary proof: return air-ticket booking and hotel reservation

The photo specification is not the standard passport size used in the UAE, and photos that pass elsewhere get rejected here. Get them taken to the 48×33 spec rather than reusing what is in your drawer.

The invitation letter is the item that catches independent travellers. A hotel booking alone is not an invitation — the requirement lists an invitation from an agency or an individual as a separate document from the itinerary proof.

The 240-hour transit rule, and whether it helps you

China’s visa-free transit allowance runs to 240 hours — 10 days — for nationals of 54 countries, applied when travelling onward to a third country.

Eligibility keys on your passport’s nationality, not on your residence. The UAE is on that list, so an Emirati passport holder routing through China can use it. For an Indian passport, check the current list before planning around it — and note the structural point that repeats across this site: your UAE residence does not transfer another passport’s privileges to yours.

That principle is the same one that governs the Turkey e-Visa for Indians, where a Dubai residence cannot substitute for a Schengen, US, UK or Ireland document. China and Türkiye disagree on almost everything else, and agree on that.

Where you file, and when it is open

Applications go to the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre, Wafi Mall, Level 3, Falcon Phase 2, Umm Hurrair 2, Dubai.

How this compares with your other options

The same Indian passport gets very different answers across the destinations we cover, and the pattern is worth holding in one place.

China asks the most of your residence: six months old, plus your sponsor’s letter. Türkiye ignores your residence entirely and asks for a third country’s document instead. Vietnam asks for neither — every nationality is eligible, and only the calendar constrains you. Saudi Arabia treats your GCC residence as the qualification itself.

Four destinations, four completely different readings of the same two documents in your pocket.

Where Indian applicants in the UAE go wrong

Three errors account for most rejected packs.

Expecting a visa-free or e-Visa route. There is neither for an Indian passport. India is outside the 49-country visa-free policy, and ordinary passport holders file in person at the centre.

Bringing a residence permit that is too new. Six months from issue is the test, and it is on the document rather than on your time in the country.

Reusing standard passport photos. The specification is 48mm × 33mm, taken within six months. This is a common and entirely avoidable rejection.

How to verify this before you file

Requirements at this centre have been updated more than once, and the notices are the authority.

Read the CVASC Dubai notice on updated visa requirements for the residence conditions, the Chinese Embassy in the UAE visa section for the filing rules that apply where you live, and the embassy in India’s FAQ on visa-free entry for the current position on the visa-free list. Confirm the centre’s hours and address on the day you plan to go.

If a condition here no longer matches what the centre tells you, tell us and we will correct the page — we date every rule for exactly this reason.

Sources

Can an Indian passport holder enter China visa-free?
No. India is not included in China's unilateral visa-free policy, which covers 49 countries and runs to 31 December 2026. An Indian passport holder needs a visa regardless of where they live, including UAE residents.
What does the Dubai centre ask of an Indian resident?
Three conditions attached to residence rather than nationality: a UAE residence visa issued six months ago, a no-objection letter from your UAE sponsor, and — if your residence was issued under Abu Dhabi jurisdiction — a tenancy contract proving you live in the Dubai jurisdiction.
What documents does a tourist visa need?
A passport with at least six months validity and more than two blank visa pages, two recent colour photos sized 48mm x 33mm taken within the last six months, an invitation letter from a Chinese travel agency or an individual, and itinerary proof — return air ticket booking and hotel reservation.
Can I use the 240-hour visa-free transit on an Indian passport?
Eligibility keys on the passport's nationality and covers 54 countries. The UAE is on that list; check the current list for India before planning around it. A UAE residence does not extend the transit concession to a passport that is not covered.
