Keep Your UAE Number Working Abroad: SMS Codes, Roaming Packs and a Data eSIM
Without a roaming pack, an e&, du or Virgin Mobile line carries no mobile data abroad. The number still receives SMS: e& lists “Incoming SMS Free” in every roaming zone (eand.ae, opened 24 October 2026). That split is the whole method. Keep the UAE line on for calls and codes, and carry data on a second line. This page is for residents travelling out on a valid permit. Your number abroad: free SMS on e&, up to AED 4.25 a minute for calls you take
On e&, an SMS you receive abroad costs nothing, and a call you receive costs AED 0.808 a minute in the GCC or AED 4.25 elsewhere (e& standard roaming rates, opened 24 October 2026). Virgin Mobile lists “Receive AED 0.00” for SMS. du publishes no price for SMS you receive abroad.

The e& pay-as-you-go rate explains why the block exists. Outside the GCC, e& lists data at AED 1.5 per 30KB on prepaid and AED 1 per 30KB on postpaid (eand.ae, 24 October 2026). That is about AED 51 and AED 34 per megabyte (our arithmetic). du’s own pages disagree on prepaid incoming calls, per eSIM Go, so check the du app.
Why the number matters more to a resident than to a tourist
60, 90 or 180 days: that is the grace period after a UAE residence permit expires, depending on how it was issued (our residence visa renewal guide, checked 29 July 2026). That clock does not stop while you travel. Neither do the logins and codes that run a resident’s life.
ICP’s smart services and the UAEICP app sign you in with UAE Pass or a username, as our apply-online and cancellation guides record. Banks and many apps send one-time codes by SMS to the number on file. eSIM Go advises keeping the UAE SIM on for any app that sends a verification code by SMS (20 October 2026). No operator page it read promises that bank codes will arrive abroad. The e& rates page we opened makes no such promise either.
The Emirates ID is the document a telecom shop asks for. A lapsed card can block a SIM change at the counter, so sort it before you need one. Our Emirates ID guide covers renewal and replacement.
The two-line set-up: UAE SIM for calls and codes, a data eSIM for the internet
Two lines and three settings do the job. The UAE line stays on for calls and SMS. A travel eSIM carries the data, with Data Roaming on. The UAE line’s own mobile data and data roaming stay off. eSIM Go documents this set-up for iPhone and Android (20 October 2026).
- The UAE line keeps its number and stays switched on. A line that is off gets no calls or SMS.
- The eSIM is the data line, with Data Roaming on.
- The UAE line is the main line for calls, with its mobile data and data roaming off.

Roaming pack or data eSIM: a week abroad in AED
AED 100 buys a 7-day roaming week on both e& prepaid (4GB) and du postpaid (10GB). du prepaid charges AED 200 for the same 10GB. A data-only eSIM for India, 10GB for 30 days, is AED 73.99 (eSIM Go, 15 and 19 October 2026, citing the operators' own pages).

Roaming wins in two cases. A Virgin Mobile plan of 20GB and up includes One Country Data Roaming at no charge, for one country a month (per eSIM Go, 19 October 2026). And a trip heavy on calls home favours a pack with minutes, because a data eSIM has none. The operator tables sit on eSIM Go: du’s prepaid and postpaid bundles, line by line. How much to buy? eSIM Go’s calculator assumes 0.3GB a day for maps and messaging, 0.8GB for social media and photos, and 1.7GB for video and video calls (15 October 2026). A week of social media is 5.6GB (our arithmetic). Run your own trip through the data calculator by days and use.
iPhone 17, 17e and Air: move the UAE line to eSIM before you fly
Three iPhone models sold in the UAE take no physical SIM. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air are eSIM-only and keep two eSIMs active at once (Apple UAE tech specs, as quoted by eSIM Go, 20 October 2026). On those phones the UAE number must already be an eSIM.
e& will not issue one abroad. Its FAQ asks “Can I request an eSIM while roaming?” and answers “No, you will need to be in the UAE to request an eSim” (eand.ae, opened 24 October 2026). So convert the UAE line at home, then add the travel eSIM as the second line.
Older phones vary. Apple lists the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later as eSIM-capable (Apple Support UAE, via eSIM Go, 15 October 2026). Check your exact model on eSIM Go’s list of phones that take an eSIM.

- Whether UAE Pass, ICP and GDRFA logins behave differently from abroad on a foreign data line. We found no official statement either way, so we give no steps.
